History:
Galilee Regional Catholic Primary School opened in 1994, bringing together four local Catholic primary schools to create one blended school community. The four schools were:
• Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Middle Park
• St Joseph’s, Port Melbourne
• Ss Peter and Paul’s, South Melbourne
• Sacred Heart, St Kilda West.
Galilee was created to serve the educational needs of children in the bayside area and to ensure that quality Catholic education would be provided both now and well into the 21st century.
Blending the four existing Catholic parish primary schools meant the creation of a harmonious union of separate but equal elements. To blend these elements in a school and yet develop new structures that would cater for the educational needs of the Catholic community was a huge undertaking.
Galilee is the first regional Catholic primary school in Victoria. It is situated on the former site of St Joseph’s Technical School which closed in 1988.
The future of Catholic education in our region now walks with the motto: “In Christ We LIVE, LOVE and LEARN”.
Description:
The Galilee site is currently home to students in years Prep–6, and consists of an art room, a library, classrooms, staff resources and an administration area. The recently constructed multi-purpose hall is unique as it caters for students who wish to engage in quiet activities at recess and lunchtime. It is also the school's venue for fortnightly assemblies as well as a facility for local community groups.
Features:
Our curriculum offers a broad range of opportunities to assist students to develop competence, enjoyment and a love of learning within each of the learning domains.
Within the domains, specialist staff teach Visual Arts, Physical Education, Library (skills and literature) and Performing Arts. Italian is also offered to our students. Other programs offered include: Computer Education, Outdoor Education (Camp), a Social Skills Program and English as a Second Language Support Program.
Our endeavours to provide a quality, Catholic education for the children in the bayside area are probably best summed up in the following excerpt from our Vision Statement:
'The mission of our school is to create a place where the Gospel values of community, hope, justice, faith and reconciliation are integral to our faith, culture and teaching.
We are a Christian family which respects and is accepting of other faiths.
Our belief is that every person has an innate and special worth. To this end we wish to create:
• a safe atmosphere in which all who experience this community will grow in their own richness, fullness and integrity. This will be encouraged through the belief of God’s love for us.
• a place where people’s strengths and weaknesses are recognised and catered for in a supportive and encouraging manner.'
