History:

The Mercy Sisters have been involved in education in the Coburg district since 1886. Mercy College was opened in 1966 as a regional secondary College for girls and conducted by the Sisters of Mercy until 1978 until the first lay Principal was appointed. The Sisters have continued their close association with the College which maintains the Mercy ethos.

Description:

Mercy College is a Catholic secondary school catering for the young women of the northern suburbs of Melbourne, in the Mercy tradition of striving for excellence within an environment of compassion and caring for students and their families. The College provides education for girls in Years 7 to 12. The Mercy College vision for each student is that she will become a socially responsible, compassionate, critical and articulate young woman who will make a difference to the changing world in which she lives.

Student expression of creativity and imagination is encouraged through participation in mainstream programs as well as a wide range of co-curricular activities. Prayer and faith development are an integral part of the life of the College where liturgies and reflections mark special feast days and occasions. Mercy College has a strong pastoral care focus with a number of programs established to induct and support students in their journey through adolescence.

Recent refurbishments have provided outstanding facilities in practical areas, taking education at Mercy into the 21st century. The grounds have also been greatly enhanced by projects completed in the Art curriculum, including a terracotta wall featuring the history of Australia. Mercy College is readily accessible by train, tram or bus.

Features:

Aspects of the curriculum utilise the adjacent Merlynston Creek where planting of indigenous species has provided a wildlife corridor and added to the 'green' area in the school.

A $4m project will see the most of the facilities refurbished over the next five years.

Mercy College offers its students a broad range of subjects across all curriculum areas, including VET and VCAL programs. It also offers a range of co-curricular activities including music, dance, drama, debating, study tours and a wide range of sports. Mercy sport teams are successful in local, state and national competitions.
