History:
St Joseph's Primary School, Northcote, was originally established in 1893 by the Sisters of Mercy in Arthurton Road, Northcote. After several years the school came under the care of the Good Samaritan Sisters, who would travel by horse and cart from South Yarra.
With the increasing number of students it became apparent that the Arthurton Road site was no longer viable. The Diocese purchased our present site in 1912 and soon afterwards construction began of a church, presbytery and a school.
A new large two-storey brick school was opened in 1916, with an enrolment of approximately 800 pupils.
