Compassion in action
20 February 2025
Today, the World Day of Social Justice, sees Melbourne ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ Catholic Schools (ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ) schools not only teaching the important Catholic value of service to others, but actively enabling their students, staff and communities to go out and enrich the world.
Now in its 11th year, the Community Companion Food and Outreach Van at John Paul College has become an important fixture in the Frankston community. ‘It was an initiative that grew out of a group of students who were studying homelessness, its causes and also then looking at how we can support those people who are unfortunate enough to be in that situation’, said Principal John Visentin.
‘The students wanted to do something. They didn’t just want to understand; they wanted to take action. So out of their faith commitment, out of their commitment to the good of other people, they started to explore ways to bring that to action. Their hard work, and the support of teachers and other staff, culminated in the Community Companion Food and Outreach Van.’
Over the past decade, the outreach program has grown. It now partners with Foodbank and local businesses for donations, the volunteer base includes the college’s feeder primary school communities, and the service runs every Tuesday and Thursday – even during school holidays.
‘I cherish the moments I get to spend with all different types of people from all different backgrounds. I really enjoy having those meaningful conversations and being able to form connections with people’, said student volunteer, Ava.
Beyond the practical support of giving food, toiletries and clothing, the true impact for both the volunteers and the community members has stemmed from the human connections formed. ‘The van isn’t just about the items you receive; it’s about knowing there’s someone who cares’, said a community member.
This is one of countless examples of compassion in action in ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ schools, where we motivate and enable students to act, flourish and enrich the world around them.
