Esther KalalaEsther Kalala knows all too well how difficult it can be to make friends and feel like you belong. The Year 10 student at Emmanuel College, Altona North, emigrated from Zambia with her family as a young child and struggled to fit into life in Australia. ‘Learning the language was pretty easy, but making friends was the hardest part’, she said.

Two years ago, Esther started a social club at the school to help foster an environment of inclusion and promote intercultural communication. ‘I struggled a little bit to connect with people, so I want to make it easier for other people’, Esther said.

The success of her club has earned her a National Award for Intercultural Excellence from Together for Humanity. These awards recognise secondary school student champions who demonstrate leadership, passion and influence in intercultural and/or interfaith concepts or issues.

Esther’s passion for helping people to connect was fostered through support from friends and teachers, and she wants to continue on this path. ‘I want to be a teacher or a lawyer to help people – I like helping people a lot’, she said.
