science week at Avila CollegeAt Avila College, Mount Waverley, the theme for this year’s National Science Week, ‘Species Survival – More than just sustainability’, sparked a creative response from Science teacher, Sarah Thorn, who ran a Stile escape room activity in the school’s laboratory:

‘Students had to solve puzzles, break codes and think creatively as they embraced each challenge to work out the code to restore power in the virtual conservation park and protect the vulnerable species.

‘It was a great team-building and problem-solving exercise that brought the Science Week theme to life in a fun and interactive manner’, she said.

The theme aimed to highlight the importance of science and innovation in ensuring the survival and thriving of different species in an ever-changing world.

The activity inspired the students to use their skills to solve the escape room clues. Amanthi (Year 10) said, ‘Science is a great way to get us thinking critically and creatively’.

Through this activity, the students were enabled to take their learning beyond the classroom. ‘Science Week is always a highlight as we have the chance to apply the knowledge we develop in class in fun and interesting scenarios’, said Umme (Year 10).

was held 10–18 August.
