Year 8 students from , Brighton, were presented with a challenge that only engineering could solve. With the guidance of Engineers Without Borders, the students were asked to create a chair out of cardboard without any glue or tape that would be sturdy, quick to assemble to make life a little easier for refugees.

In groups of five, the students worked through their prototypes before scaling-up to produce their finished chair. The eight finalists demonstrated creativity and imagination to engineer furniture that was innovative, robust and could withstand the ‘sit test’ from a brave member of the College’s staff. Ruby, Ruby, Maya, Alyssa and Neve from the winning team discuss the process of creating their chair and the challenges and successes of working as a team.

National Science Week 2017 continues until Sunday 20 August.
