For this year’s National Water Week school poster competition, our students used their creativity to make artworks with inspiring messages about the importance of water for our planet and in our lives. Several ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ students placed in the top three at the state level.

At St Lawrence Catholic Primary School, Derrimut, Stella came second in the Prep category for creating what Harriet Shing MP, Minister for Water, described as a ‘very, very bright and colourful artwork’, including the message of this year’s theme: Water for all, inspiring action.

Our Lady of the Rosary, Kyneton, used the competition as a challenge for the whole school as part of its STEAM program. ‘It helped to raise awareness of the importance of water as well as create art that conveys a message. Our students love entering into art competitions and having two of our students recognised at the state level is fantastic', said Dan MacDonald (STEAM team member).

Clancy Darby

Clancy, who came second in the Grades 1 and 2 category said, ‘My inspiration for the poster was everyone needs water to grow and every living thing needs water to grow and survive’. Also from Our Lady of the Rosary, Darby was joint third place winner said, ‘I was so surprised and excited, it’s cool how they made my picture into a puzzle too’.

Fernando Garcia from Barwon Water came to Nazareth School, Grovedale, to a whole school assembly and presented Zhenqi with her third place prize for the Grades 3 and 4 category.

Zhenqi said, ‘I spent a lot of time on my poster and I really wanted to win. I thought drawing waves and writing the words 'water for all, inspiring action’ would be a great idea for my design. My mum said I should add some animals to it, so I did. I also wanted to add hands with different skin tones’.

Nazareth School’s Visual Arts teacher Cam Plapp said, ‘Zhenqi is such a wonderful young artist with excellent skills and fantastic ideas. She works very hard in art and I am so pleased that she has been recognised for her talents. The school is very proud of her!’

This year saw the poster competition’s biggest participation rate yet, with 5168 posters entered from 257 schools.

National Water Week was held 21–27 October.
