New 5 Star school
12 December 2024
This month, Our Lady of the Nativity School in Aberfeldie was awarded its fifth ResourceSmart Schools star. As one of only five schools in Victoria to receive their fifth star this year, the award is a testament to the dedication and passion of the students, staff and broader community.
The awards ceremony was attended by Deputy Premier and Minister for Education, the Hon Ben Carroll MP, and representatives from Sustainability Victoria, who presented the school with its fifth star and acknowledged the incredible work of the school community in achieving this milestone: ‘Achieving 5 Stars is where schools embed sustainability in everything they do’.
Our Lady of the Nativity School began its ResourceSmart Schools journey in 2020, when it appointed a sustainability leader and established the Franciscan Action Team, made up of Year 6 students.
The team set ambitious sustainability goals, including reducing energy consumption, minimising water usage, cutting waste and increasing biodiversity at the school. These goals guided the school community’s direction and led to the development of projects across all levels of the school.
It was an opportunity for our school to be proud of our work and, when we were awarded the fifth star, we felt proud of our efforts and our school; it was a great accomplishment (Livinia Cichello and Hannah Abdelmeseeh, members of the Franciscan Action Team for 2024).
This achievement is an acknowledgement of the school’s commitment to stewardship of the earth, fostering a sense of responsibility and empowering students to take meaningful action towards creating a sustainable future.
