26 July 2021

Grandparents took pride of place in the virtual assembly at St Fidelis’ School, Moreland, to celebrate the Church’s inaugural World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly.

Pope Francis has proclaimed the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly would be celebrated on the fourth Sunday in July each year – 25 July in 2021. The day is marked near the feast of Sts Joachim and Anne, the grandparents of Jesus. Despite the current restrictions, the school community was still able to come together remotely and celebrate the older people who are so dear to them.

‘Grandparents Day reminds us not only of the important bonds of our families, but how much we take inspiration from those who went before us to help shape our Catholic identity’, said principal Manuela Watson. ‘St Fidelis’ students thank their wonderful grandparents and elderly friends for the special times they have with them, and the joy and happiness they bring to their lives.’

The assembly featured a liturgy celebrating grandparents, as well as a video presentation of those nearest and dearest to the students. Students also shared their reflections on why their grandparents and the elderly were so special to them:

‘I love my grandparents because they are always kind, they make me happy when I feel sad and they make amazing food. They have done a lot for me and I thank them for every moment I spend with them.’

‘I love my grandparents because they are always really nice to me and tell stories about when they were kids. I love them!’

‘I love playing card games with my grandma and winning because she doesn’t have her glasses on. She makes me delicious food and I really appreciate her.’
